James Gurney at the Plein Air Convention

The second annual
Plein Air Convention is winding down as we speak, and it's safe to say a great time is being had by all in beautiful Monterey, California.
Shown here is
Dinotopia creator and Convention faculty member
James Gurney, sketching calla lilies in watercolor and gouache.

He describes his process, and then says, "
I have rationalized these steps after the fact to try to give you the impression that I knew what I was doing, but my mind state was rather scrambled and chaotic as I did the painting. I agree with John Sargent's description of the watercolor painting experience as 'making the best of an emergency'—and that's what I love about the medium."

At left is a 5x8 painting he did near Fisher-man's wharf. He'll tell us more about the Convention in his
blog tomorrow.
And
here is a link to a video of him painting a different subject, a row of plein air painters, using gouache to paint over a previous watercolor sketch.
